Oude Pekela

Oude Pekela sits in the northeastern Netherlands, about 5 kilometers southwest of Winschoten in Groningen province. This former peat colony developed along a drainage canal that once transported extracted peat from the surrounding boglands. The town's linear layout follows the waterway, with houses and buildings stretched along the canal in the characteristic pattern of Dutch peat settlements. Drivers reach Oude Pekela via the A7 motorway, which connects the town to the national highway network. Local routes include the 20-kilometer drive to Zuidbroek and the 23-kilometer journey to the historic fortress town of Bourtange. Popular longer routes take visitors 66 kilometers to Dwingeloo, 71 kilometers to Coevorden, and 111 kilometers to Zwolle. The area offers approximately 30 public fast charging stations for electric vehicles. The surrounding landscape has transformed from its original peatland into productive farmland, though nature restoration projects are gradually returning sections to their bog ecosystem state. The temperate maritime climate brings mild summers and cool winters, with the most favorable driving conditions from April through October. The flat terrain and well-maintained roads make navigation straightforward year-round. During the 19th century, Oude Pekela developed a maritime transport industry with local shipowners operating cargo vessels along the canal system, before the 20th century brought cardboard and potato starch industries to replace the shipping trade.
