Hoorn

Hoorn sits on the eastern shore of the Markermeer in North Holland, about 35 kilometers north of Amsterdam. The historic port city connects to the national highway network via the A7, which runs east-west through the region. From Amsterdam, take the A10 ring road north to the A7 toward Hoorn. The N302 provides a scenic alternative route along the water from Almere and Lelystad. Most visitors arrive via longer routes from major cities and airports. Popular drives include the 55-kilometer journey from Schiphol Airport via the A4 and A7, and the 56-kilometer route from Haarlem through the polders. Northern destinations like Harlingen (76 km) and Leeuwarden (101 km) connect via the A7 across the Afsluitdijk. Coastal routes to Egmond aan Zee and Bergen aan Zee cover about 39 kilometers through West Friesland's farmland. Local traffic flows mainly to nearby towns like Schagen (29 km), Zaandam (32 km), and Medemblik (20 km). The city center has limited parking, but approximately 100 public fast EV chargers serve the area. Hoorn's position on the Markermeer moderates winter temperatures, though January averages just 3 degrees Celsius. Summer highs reach around 17 degrees. The Westfries Museum occupies a magnificent 1632 building on Roode Steen square, where the original weigh house scales that once measured the wealth of the Dutch Golden Age still hang in the entrance hall.
