Hindeloopen sits on the eastern shore of the IJsselmeer in Friesland, one of the eleven historic cities linked by the legendary Elfstedentocht ice skating race. Longer routes from Leeuwarden (45 km), Heerenveen (52 km), and even Zwolle (84 km) indicate the town's appeal to out-of-region visitors exploring the Frisian lakes district. The town draws sailors and cyclists during summer months, particularly those following the Friese Merenroute cycling path. Winter brings cold, windy conditions that occasionally create the ice conditions necessary for the famous Elfstedentocht.
